A block paving driveway is one of the best investments you can make to elevate your home’s kerb appeal and property value. Whether you’re planning a brand-new installation or looking to breathe new life into an existing, weathered driveway, there are a few things worth thinking through first.
1. New Installation vs. Professional Refurbishment
Before committing to the cost of a completely new driveway, it’s worth evaluating the structural integrity of your current paving:
- When to refurbish: if your driveway is structurally sound but suffering from weed growth, moss, oil stains or faded colour, a professional restoration is usually the more cost-effective option. Deep-cleaning, re-sanding and a premium seal can bring a tired driveway back to something close to its original condition.
- When to choose new paving: if there’s severe sagging, shifting or sinkage caused by a failing sub-base, a complete excavation and new installation is the only way to guarantee long-term durability.

- Sub-base depth: a driveway built for vehicular traffic needs a minimum of 150mm of compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base. Anything less and you’ll see rutting and sinking under the weight of modern cars.
- SUDS drainage: UK driveways need to comply with Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems regulations to prevent surface flooding. We build in proper falls, linear drainage channels and soakaway systems so every installation stays compliant.
3. Material Selection and Quality Standards
When installing new paving, the quality of the blocks determines how well they resist wear and fading over time.

- Choosing high-quality concrete or natural stone block paving gives better freeze-thaw resistance, helping prevent cracking through harsh winters.
4. Ongoing Maintenance and Protection
Whether new or refurbished, a block paving driveway needs a bit of proactive care to stand up to the British weather.
- Re-sanding: replacing lost kiln-dried jointing sand keeps the blocks locked in place and prevents movement over time.
- Sealing: a high-grade polyurethane or acrylic sealer protects the surface against oil spills, helps prevent weed growth, and brings out the natural colour of the stone with a matte, satin or gloss finish.
